CAPD

Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) is a receptive language disorder where the brain has difficulty processing auditory information. This is not a hearing impairment.

Individuals with CAPD may manifest some of the following symptoms:

• Needs instructions to be repeated
• Tendency to say ‘huh’ or ‘what’
  
• Difficulties with following instructions
• Poor memory
• Easily distracted (may be misinterpreted as attention problems)
  
• Difficulty distinguishing similar sounding words
  
• Takes a longer time to process information and thus delay in responding etc

Severe CAPD often interferes with vestibular system development (timing, rhythm, balance) and often contributes to sensory integration (SI) disorder.

Occupational Therapist may work with children with CAPD in the following ways:

• Only for therapists who are trained with sound therapy: Use of auditory programs like SAMONAS (Spectrally Activated Music of Optimal Natural Structure)
• Using sensory integration techniques to work on balance and control etc.
